Finally Jalandhar to get an airport

It seems the long awaited demand of Jalandharies to have an airport might be coming to a result soon. Central Government .
Jalandhar Airport
The central government has decided to set up 51 new low-cost airports with an aim to give boost to civil aviation sector and increase air connectivity to Tier-II and Tier-III cities. The state-owned airport operator, Airports Authority of India (AAI), would set up the low-cost airports in 51 cities in Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Maharashtra. In Punjab these low-cost airports would come up at Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Firozpur.

As is well known lots of the people from Doaba region have settled abroad but sadly Doaba do not have any public airport and closest airport is in Delhi,Amritsar or Chandigarh. Though the proposal is only to setup low cost airports and likely will not have any direct international flight in the beginning but it is a step in right direction and hopefully in future we will see a fledgling airport of international standard that will come as a relief to millions of Jalandharies settled abroad.
It is to be seen where in Jalandhar  this airport will be setup. Closest contenders might be Adampur or new area developed around Kapurthala road. A Class-I airfield at Adampur is situated at a distance of 19 km. There was an earlier preliminary proposal during the time when Gujral was Prime Minister of India, but the proposal died down its natural death as political environment changed.
