Here are some of top 5 happenings in Jalandhar for week ending Aug 16,2009.

* Swine Flu is again becoming a big concern for Jalandharies. Two NRIs from Jalandhar are suspected to have Swine Flu though it has not been confermed yet.

* Water and electricity problems continue to plague Jalandharies. Every week Jalandharies have been protesting on this issue. Now even Punjab Goverment has expressed their inability in solving the crisis and their is no hope in sight for years to come as building a power plant take years and no politician looks that far and they are concerned only for next election and promise of free electricity seems winnable promise than promise of building a power plant.

* Mr. Gurpreet Ghuggi and his wife Kuljeet Kaur made Jalandharies proud by winning the Hans Baliye contest. As always their performance was excellent. We wish them great success for years to come.

* Last week Janam Ashtami was celebrated with great fervour across Jalandhar. We wish all Jalandharies a Happy Janam Ashtami again.

* Independence Day was also celebrated with great enthusiasm . Independence day celebrations were held in most of schools. District level Independence day celebrations were held at Guru Gobind Singh Stadium. Tiranga was unfurled at 9:00 Am by Rural Developement and Panchayat Minister Mr. Ranjit Singh Brahampura. We wish all a very happy independence Day.

We Regret to inform you that ex Jalandhar MP and current  President of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), Umrao Singh passed away at his Jalandhar residence early on Sunday morning following a brief illness. He was 83.

One of the most experienced sports administrators in the country, Umrao Singh’s association with athletics dates back to 1958. He was the president of the athletics federation in 1968 and then again between 1972 and 1976 when he was also a member of the Council of the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF).

He held several posts in the Amateur Athletics Federation of India (AAFI, now AFI) after that before stepping in as its acting president in 2005 when Mr. Suresh Kalmadi resigned. Umrao Singh was elected president of the AFI in 2008, despite failing health, and retained that post in 2008.

Umrao Singh was also associated with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) as its vice president and has been one of its associate vice presidents for some time now.

Conferred with the Padma Bhushan in 1983 for his contribution to the successful conduct of the 1982 New Delhi Asian Games, He was also a minister in the Punjab Government under the late Beant Singh before becoming a Member of Parliament in the 90s.

Born on January 1, 1926 at Guru Har Sahai, Firozepur District, Punjab, Umrao Singh’s first love was hockey. He captained the N.A.C High School, Bhurewal, in 1943 and then played for S. N. College and F.C. College, Lahore. In the 1946-47 season, he represented Punjab University.

It was through his initiative that in 1975 the Punjab Government invited the Indian hockey team to train in Chandigarh under its expenditure. The rest is history as the Ajitpal Singh-led Indian team won its one and only World Cup to date in Kuala Lumpur.

DO HISSIAN WHICH BHON WANDI; EK LOKAN DEE; EK JOKAN DEE’

clock July 15, 2008 19:17 by author schhibber

We have received a very thought provoking letter from respected "Onkar Singh Riar' from Jalandhar. It raises the question whether people really have power in democracy or there should be referendum on important issues like "Nuclear Deal issue" India is facing. Here are the thoughts of Mr. Onkar Singh

"    ‘DO HISSIAN WHICH BHON WANDI; EK LOKAN DEE; EK JOKAN DEE’ (Translation: Land is divided into two segments; one of the people; and the other of suckers). Such a situation is visible rather is being propagated. The issue is whether the nuclear deal should be signed or not. Members of Parliament are not free to vote according to their conscience because there is no Article on ‘Conscience’ in the Constitution of India.. They are forced to follow the party line. Even the office of the speaker is not forgiven. Testing the validity of the Government on floor of the house may decide either in favour of the Government or against the Government. But the fundamental question before the Nation will not get a honest answer. In such a scenario it is suggested that the issue may please be placed before the people to decide either in favour of the deal or against the deal. Thereafter if required the validity of the Government could be tested on the floor of the house. Let us save the Nation from suckers.
Yours sincerely
ONKAR SINGH RIAR
